Florida residents going through a divorce may be interested in learning that, on April 7, it was reported that singer Mel B was requesting full custody of her daughter. The former Spice Girl had originally requested joint custody of the child she had with her former husband but ultimately altered the divorce petition as a result of her ex’s violent history.
In the divorce petition, the singer claimed that her husband had assaulted her by punching, choking and berating her throughout the course of their relationship. She was awarded a temporary restraining order after making the allegations and is reportedly attempting to make it permanent.
Her husband requested joint custody of the child. It was reported that Mel B may potentially allow the child to have monitored visits with her father at some point in the future, though not immediately. Additionally, the singer reportedly did not want to allow her husband to communicate with her other two children from previous relationships.
When couples with children divorce, it is likely that one parent will be responsible for paying child support, especially if the other one has primary custody of the kids. A family law attorney may assist the obligator to gather the documentation the court needs to determine how much he or she will owe in child support, including both parents’ financial records and any specific needs the children may have. If one parent wants full custody while the other one wants joint custody, a lawyer may submit evidence to a judge that shows that it is beneficial for a child to have both parents involved in his or her upbringing.
