Turn To A Lawyer With Knowledge And Experience Resolving Military Family Law Matters
Servicemembers and spouses face many unique challenges when dealing with divorce or another family law issue. These cases can be complex, particularly when a member of the military is stationed overseas or in another part of the country.
It is important to choose a lawyer who understands these situations and knows the unique laws that apply.
United States Navy Veteran
At Wood Law Firm in Destin, we truly understand military life. Our founding attorney, Drew Wood, spent the majority of his childhood in Germany as one of five children of a career Army officer father. As an adult, he spent nearly four years serving in the United States Navy aboard a Spruance-class destroyer. We pair our firsthand insight of military life with knowledge of military-specific laws that apply in family law cases, such as the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (formerly known as the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Act).
We represent members of all branches of the military, including the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard, as well as military spouses. We handle all family law matters.
Knowledge Of All Aspects Relating To Military Divorce
One of the biggest distinctions between a civilian divorce and a military divorce is the division of military retirement pay. While all retirement accounts are subject to division under Florida family law, there is a distinction in terms of how the retirement funds may be paid out to the nonmilitary spouse. Depending on the length of the marriage and the length of service, the nonmilitary spouse may be entitled to direct payment from Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS). Even if the spouse is not eligible for direct payment, the account may still be divided. At our law firm, we understand all such nuances and are able to protect your interests when it comes to property division, alimony, child custody and child support.
Handling Military Child Custody And Support Issues
The military lifestyle tends to be one of frequent moves and long periods of deployment. The realities of this life need to be taken into consideration when reaching child custody agreements. Whether you are going through a divorce or you are an unwed military payment, we can help you protect your relationship with your child. We can also address child support.
