Floridians who are fans of the television show “Rehab Addict” might be interested in learning about the custody dispute the show’s star, Nicole Curtis, has with her ex-boyfriend, Shane Maguire. The pair has been battling over custody of their 1-year-old son.
After Curtis had her son, Maguire filed a paternity motion that showed that he was the child’s father. Curtis had sole custody of their son at the time, and she responded by filing a motion for child support, child care expenses and half of her birthing expenses. She told the court that Maguire made $20,000 per week, but he submitted documents showing that he made $3,744 per week instead.
Maguire was given weekend parenting time with their son. Curtis then requested to move to California. The court allowed her to do so but ordered that Maguire would continue to have their son on weekends. The court ordered both parents to split the cost of the travel between Minnesota and California. Maguire then returned to court, claiming that Curtis has failed to abide by the weekend visitation schedule. Curtis has claimed that she did so because their son had an ear infection and couldn’t travel.
Unmarried couples may have to deal with child custody and visitation issues if they share children and later split up. A family law attorney may help a client to establish paternity. This can help an unmarried mother to secure child support from the other parent. It can also help an unmarried father to assert his rights to visitation and custody.
